An Introduction to Chinese Painting
Chinese painting is one of the oldest continuous artistic traditions in the world, it is a combination of painting, arts of poetry, calligraphy and seal engraving.
Chinese painting can be classified as landscapes, figure paintings and flower-and-bird paintings. Landscapes have traditionally been the favourite of the Chinese because they show the poetry inherent in nature.
The two major techniques of Chinese painting are meticulous (‘Gong-bi’) and freehand (‘Shui-mo’). Meticulous is characterized by fine brush work and close attention to detail; freehand emphasizes the sentiments, which is the basic school of thought in traditional Chinese painting.
The four treasures of Chinese painting are: Paper (Rice Paper), Ink (Ink stick), Brush and Ink Slab.
